How to fix a stuck filter

The following method was explained to me by a Canon Professional Service technician.  Note: this procedure is not recommended for the faint of heart!

  1. My UV filter stuck on my canon 55-250mm lens, i tried too much , even service center also tried, finally , one local service center has some tool to catch filter and broke the filter ring and removed it.
He was telling that i need to remove filter when not in use for long time. Any how small self service for lens is required every month, so i do it.

  2. I can testify that this works! A visiting relative just came home with a cracked filter. Having read this on another site recently I tried a variation using a metal file and it worked like a charm! Thanks for the great idea.

    • Very glad it worked for you, Mike. There have been a lot of alternate methods suggested in other forums where this article appeared – most of the methods are far less invasive and I would definitely use the method above only as a last resort. ;)

    • That’s a fair question, Kelly, but I’d already tried a rubber grip and a bottle wrench but it wouldn’t even budge. The techs at Canon Professional Service warned that any extra effort might strip the threads of the lens itself. I grant you this is a pretty extreme approach, but bottom line is that it worked!
